The Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) extensions have been built within the Wernher & Beit North Building, filling in the two rear courtyards with contemporary, light-weight three-storey structures. These provide additional open-plan administrative and research space as well as increased laboratory space in a minimalist envelope that respects the heritage building surrounding it. The steel and glass infill buildings touch lightly on the existing building and incorporate triple-volume, linear light wells along the back wall, full-height slot windows on the ground floor and angled outer columns cantilevering the new upper floors.
